Fetal Infant Morbidity Review (FIMR)

The Fetal Infant Morbidity Reviews (FIMR) are quarterly local meetings of diverse community partners including medical providers, healthcare system members, public health representatives, and those serving individuals diagnosed with syphilis or HIV.

The meeting consists of case reviews comprising medical chart abstractions and maternal interviews. These reviews offer valuable insights into the maternal experience before, during, and after pregnancy. Participants identify barriers to medical care or missed opportunities for disease intervention that may have contributed to a congenital syphilis (CS) or perinatal HIV diagnosis. Participants then identify action items community advocates can address to help prevent future CS and perinatal HIV cases. They can also identify cases in which key prevention opportunities were missed. Follow-up outcomes range from direct provider outreach to changes in the law.

Case review meetings are held in Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas, the highest morbidity areas of the state. The FIMRs use enhanced medical chart abstractions that review specific time points in maternal and infant care, combined with a detailed maternal interview, to generate deidentified case summaries for participant review.
