Piney Woods

The aptly named DSHS Piney Woods Public Health Region (PHR) 4/5N is home to three of the state’s five national forests!

DSHS Piney Woods includes the city of Tyler, which was the first-ever headquarters of a public health region. It was established in 1970 as part of what was then called the Texas Department of Health. Tyler is also famous for its agriculture and is known as the "Rose Capital of the United States." It also is home to meat processing facilities that DSHS inspects. Our inspectors make sure healthy animals are humanely slaughtered in a sanitary environment.
