PRAMS is a survey designed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to collect information on specific maternal experiences before, during, and after pregnancy.

Since 2002, Texas has participated in PRAMS to improve infant and maternal health. Texas mothers who recently gave birth may complete the Texas PRAMS survey by phone, mail, or web. The PRAMS survey includes questions about many health topics such as:

  • Access to prenatal care;
  • Pregnancy intention;
  • Alcohol use;
  • Smoking and smoke exposure;
  • Type of insurance;
  • Intimate partner violence;
  • Postpartum depression;
  • Breastfeeding; and
  • Infant sleep position.

In Texas, PRAMS provides the most comprehensive population-based data on maternal health during and after pregnancy. Along with several other state agencies and stakeholders, the Department of State Health Services (DSHS) uses PRAMS data to inform, develop, and drive policies to improve the health of Texas mothers and babies.

Previously reported annually as a Databook, Texas PRAMS data are now published in an interactive dashboard. You may the view the PRAMS Data Dashboard on the Texas Health Data site. The dashboard currently displays survey results in three different views and updates annually. Due to the CDC timeline for data collection, data cleaning, and weighting, data is generally available two years after the end of each birth year.

The current Texas PRAMS Questionnaire and 2018 Databook are available below. Previous years are available on request.
