Test Description
  • Testing of suspected influenza specimens to detect the presence of Influenza A and Influenza B in symptomatic patients.
  • All positive Influenza A specimens are further tested for seasonal A/H3 and 2009 A/H1N1.
Pre-Approval NeededPlease contact the Emerging and Acute Infectious Disease Unit at 512-776-7676 if novel influenza such as A/H7N9, H5N1, and H3N2v is suspected or if there has been prior travel to countries where novel influenza is considered endemic.
Supplemental Information RequiredMay be required if novel influenza is suspected.

Specimen Labeling
  • Two patient-specific identifiers required (e.g., patient full name, date of birth, medical record number).
  • Three patient identifiers are preferred.
  • Patient identifiers on specimen label must exactly match identifiers on submission form (e.g., abbreviated name on label and full name on form is not acceptable.)

Shipping and Specimen Handling Requirements
  • Ship according to Dangerous Goods Regulations, IATA, and/or CFR 49
  • Handle as an infectious agent using universal precautions.
  • Triple-contained in accordance with federal shipping regulations for infectious agents.
  • If specimens will arrive at the Lab within 72 hours of collection, refrigerate at 2°C–8°C and ship overnight on cold packs.
  • Ship frozen at -70 ̊C and overnight on dry ice if specimens will arrive at the Laboratory more than 72 hours after time of collection.
  • Submitters are responsible for packaging and shipping specimens according to regulatory requirements.

Interferences/Limitations
  • False negative may result if specimen is improperly collected, transported, or handled.
  • Detection of viral RNA does not imply that the corresponding virus is infectious or is the causative agent for clinical symptoms.
  • A negative result does not preclude infection.
Common Causes for Rejection
  • Discrepancies between G-2V submission form and specimen label.
  • Failure to put two forms of identification on tube.
  • Specimen received cold greater than 72 hours after collection.
  • Specimen received ambient.
  • Submission of incorrect specimen type.
  • Submission of expired transport media.
