Workplace Violence Study

Grant Program

House Bill 280 (H.B. 280), 85th Texas Legislature, Regular Session, 2017, added Section 105.011 to include a workplace violence prevention grant program. The Texas Center for Nursing Workforce Studies will administer a grant program to fund innovative approaches for reducing verbal and physical violence against nurses in hospitals, freestanding emergency medical care facilities, nursing facilities, and home health agencies. The legislation requires grant recipients to submit periodic reports describing the outcome of the activities funded through the grant. Award funding for this program will be contingent upon funds being made available by the Texas Board of Nursing through an increase of nurse licensure fees.

The Department of State Health Services, with support and oversight provided by the Health and Human Services Commission, announces the availability of $667,000 in grant funds managed by the Texas Center for Nursing Workforce Studies, to support innovative approaches for reducing verbal and physical violence against nurses in hospitals, freestanding emergency medical care facilities, nursing facilities, and home health agencies. 

The intent of this RFA is to stimulate the development, evaluation, and adoption of innovative solutions to reduce workplace violence against nurses.

Submission Deadline: All applications must be received by HHS by 2:00 p.m. on Monday, September 23, 2019.

Optional Respondent Conference #2: On August 21, 2019 from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM respondents have the option of joining us for a teleconference to get a general overview of the grant program and this solicitation opportunity and to ask questions.

2018 Workplace Violence Against Nurses Facility Survey

All hospitals, long term care facilities, home health agencies, and freestanding emergency medical centers licensed in Texas were invited to participate in the 2018 Workplace Violence Against Nurses Facility Survey.

The purpose of this survey is to assess practices and strategies used by employers to prevent workplace violence against nurses. The information in this survey will serve as a guide for the development of policy recommendations that will be instrumental in shaping legislation geared toward preventing workplace violence against nurses in Texas.

2016 Facility and Individual Nurse Studies

House Bill 2696 (H.B. 2696), 84th Texas Legislature, Regular Session, 2015, added Section 105.009 to the Health and Safety Code to allow the Texas Center for Nursing Workforce Studies (TCNWS) to conduct a study on workplace violence against nurses in hospitals, freestanding emergency medical care facilities (FEC), nursing facilities, and home health agencies (HHA).
