  1. Achieve core and preventive medicine specialty competencies necessary for effective practice;
  2. Master subject matter pertaining to the scope of public health and preventive medicine duties of DSHS; and
  3. Attain board certification by the American Board of Preventive Medicine.

Message from the Program Director

Thank you for your interest in our Preventive Medicine Residency at the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). Our program promotes public health leadership, integrating knowledge and skills of medicine and other clinical professions with population health.

The training you will receive here is exceptional as we are one of just a handful of residencies housed within a state health department. Your rotations will expose you to chronic disease prevention, communicable disease prevention and management, emergency preparedness, family and community health services, environmental and consumer safety, regulatory programs, and mental health and substance abuse prevention and treatment.

We need public health doctors like you as we strive to achieve our noble vision of ensuring a healthy Texas. Thank you for exploring our program, and we hope you choose to experience your residency in our great state.
