Requirements for Registered Nurses Who Complete Texas Health Steps (THSteps) Checkups

Please note the following important information related to required training modules - Texas Health Steps (THSteps) Online Provider Education (OPE) training modules are reviewed regularly for course content and re-accreditation. Modules may become unavailable while being updated. Registered nurses (RNs) in the process of completing required training while these modules are unavailable are encouraged to complete them once they become available again. RNs using the THSteps optional Verification of Registered Nurse (RN) Competency to Perform Texas Health Steps (THSteps) Checkups form for documentation of completion of required training modules should indicate on their form that these modules were not available during the time of their training. THSteps encourages RNs to regularly check this website for important information, and to sign up for email updates at HHSC GovDelivery

RNs without CNS, NP, or CNM certification may provide THSteps medical checkups only under direct physician supervision, meaning the physician is either on site during the checkup or immediately available to furnish assistance and direction to the RN during the checkup. Prior to performing THSteps checkups, the RN must complete required training modules developed by THSteps. A complete list of all required modules, as well as access to required training modules, is available on the OPE internet at Courses by Topic (Scroll down to Required Courses for Texas Health Steps Nurses). The RN or the RN’s employer must maintain documentation of course completion in the employee’s record. Online modules are updated regularly to include new content. RNs that have completed the required modules previously are encouraged, but not required to retake online modules.

Prior to delegating a complete THSteps medical checkup to an RN, the delegating physician must establish the RN’s competency to perform the service. The delegating physician provider is responsible for the direct supervision of the RN performing the delegated service and remains responsible for any service provided to the client. Additional information can be found in the Texas Medicaid Provider Procedures Manual (TMPPM), Children’s Services Handbook, Section 5.2.1.1 Requirements for Registered Nurses Who Provide Medical Checkups.

THSteps developed the optional Verification of Registered Nurse (RN) Competency to Perform Texas Health Steps (THSteps) Checkups form for documentation of completion of required training modules. The RN or the RN’s employer must maintain documentation of course completion in the employee’s record.
