Brain Injury Awareness Month
The Texas HHS brain injury program will host their free annual conference on March 29. The conference provides information about connecting to a diverse group of people, resources, and the importance of these connections along the pathway to recovery. Continuing education credits for multiple disciplines will be offered.
The DSHS EMS and Trauma Registries collects statewide reportable event data on brain injuries. You can submit a data request from the DSHS Injury Prevention Unit for more information.

UT-CONNECT Data Fellow Opportunity
The window to submit projects to the UT-CONNECT Program's Summer 2024 cohort is now open. The CONNECT program matches its fellows with project-based, consulting opportunities. It seeks to activate learning from data and build both capacity and interest in greater data, measurement and evaluation capacity within community organizations. The application deadline is Friday, March 15.

Private Funding Announcements
Walmart: Spark Good Local Grants (March 1 - April 15, 2024)
Grants to address the unique needs of the communities where Walmart operates in the United States. Grants are provided to organizations that operate locally and directly benefit the service area of local facilities in U.S. communities where Walmart stores, Sam’s Clubs, and distribution centers are located. Grants support a variety of organizations, such as animal shelters, elder services, and community clean-up projects. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations; state or local government entities, including law enforcement or fire departments; K-12 public or nonprofit private schools, charter schools, and higher education institutions; and churches or other faith-based organizations with a proposed project that benefits the community at large, such as food pantries, soup kitchens, and clothing closets. Award: $250 - $5,000. Geographic Scope: Communities with Walmart stores, Sam's Clubs, and distribution centers
Fisher House Foundation: Fisher Service Award (March 21, 2024)
Recognizes, awards, and celebrates innovative programs that support and strengthen military and veteran communities. The focus is on new or innovative programs improve the quality of life for active duty, reserve, or National Guard members or veterans and their families. Award funding may be used to execute any necessary program expense, including wages/salaries, supplies, capital campaigns, building repair, and professional fees (for example, mental health counselors, physical therapists, etc.). Award: $250,000 divided among top nonprofit applicants and an advertising package valued at $50,000 from Military Times. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
Home Depot Foundation: Veteran Housing Grants Program (March 22, 2024)
Awards for nonprofits engaged in new construction and rehabilitation of multifamily, permanent supportive housing for veterans. Priority given to "large" cities, defined by the foundation as populations of more than 300,000 people. Award: $100,000 - $500,000. Geographic Scope: Houston has been identified as the specific focus for Texas
Imagine Learning Foundation: Signature Grant Program (March 29, 2024)
Aims to bridge connections between classroom learning and positive learning environments outside the classroom by promoting and expanding access to social and emotional learning (SEL) at home and in the community. Two funding priorities: well-being outside the classroom and education/community research. Eligible applicants include nonprofits. Award: $50,000 - $100,000. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
Episcopal Foundation of Dallas (March 31, 2024)
Support for organizations and programs that are focused on mission-related projects, social outreach, and other creative programs that engage the Episcopal community while simultaneously strengthening the community and improving lives, especially children, and which support basic human needs in food insecurity, homelessness, poverty, and health insecurity. Award: $2,000 - $25,000. Geographic Scope: Bowie, Camp, Cass, Collin, Dallas, Delta, Denton, Ellis, Fannin, Franklin, Grayson, Henderson, Hopkins, Hunt, Kaufman, Lamar, Morris, Navarro, Rains, Red River, Rockwall, Titus, Upshur, Van Zandt, and Wood Counties
Truist Community Grants (March 31 and July 31, 2024)
Investing in innovative nonprofits that align with two key areas of focus: building career pathways to economic mobility and strengthening small businesses. The Foundation supports needs that are sustainable and does not commit funds to recurring expenditures. Examples include funding for a new program launch, a curriculum to expand or strengthen a program, equipment to deliver a program, and capital needs. Award: No set amount or average grant size. The minimum grant is $5,000. Grant amounts are based on the strength of the program and how many people it impacts as well as how it aligns with our pillars and mission. Giving amounts build as the Foundation builds a relationship with the grantee. Gamma Mu Foundation (March 31, 2024)
The mission of the Gamma Mu Foundation is to make a positive difference in the lives of the LGBT community, primarily in rural and other underserved populations of the United States. Grants are awarded in the following program areas: HIV/AIDS Services, Community Services, and Research and Public Education. Resources are targeted in rural areas and or underserved areas. Award: $1,500 - $10,000. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
Fayette Community Foundation: Rural Community Health Fund Grant (April 15, 2024)
Funding to support community-based organizations, resident-led community networks, and grassroots initiatives that align with grant program's mission and objectives. Priority given to projects that address disparities in healthcare access and outcomes, with a particular focus on marginalized rural populations and vulnerable communities. Award: $1,000 to $25,000. Geographic Scope: Bastrop, Caldwell, East Williamson, and Hays Counties
Genentech Health Equity Innovation Fund (April 15, 2024)
Funds for organizations that address inequities in patient outcomes and ethnic inequities in healthcare. Specific interest in applications in therapeutic areas of neuroscience and brain health, oncology, ophthalmology, and cardiovascular and metabolic disease. Eligible applicants include nonprofits, government agencies, public schools, public colleges and universities, and public hospitals. Organizations can submit multiple applications. Award: More than 100 awards of up to $750,000 each. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
Organization for Autism Research: Community Grant Competition (April 22, 2024)
This competition recognizes the expertise of community members and aims to empower community stakeholders, such as autistic individuals, family members, and community organizations, to share their knowledge in order to improve health outcomes for autistic people. Awards will support the development of a practical tool that can positively impact the health of autistic individuals, either directly or indirectly. Award: Up to seven grants of $1,000 - $10,000. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
Foundation for Financial Planning (April 30, 2024)
Annual grants to community-based and national nonprofit organizations for programs linking volunteer financial planners to people in need. Eligible programs must engage Certified Financial Planner™ professionals as volunteers, include one-on-one engagements between financial planner volunteers and pro bono clients, and help people in need of financial guidance or in a financial crisis who are underserved by the market and couldn't ordinarily access quality, ethical advice. U.S.-based nonprofits that share FFP's commitment to helping underserved people achieve better financial stability and capability are eligible to apply. Award: $5,000 - $40,000. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
Mary Kay Ash Foundation: Domestic Violence Shelter Grant Program (April 30, 2024)
Awards grants to shelters across the country providing critical, life-saving services to women and children seeking safety from an abusive situation. Award: $20,000 to at least one domestic violence shelter in every state. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
All Kids Play: Youth Sports Grants (Rolling Basis)
Provides funding to families and communities who lack the resources to pay for youth sports. Grants are available to qualifying families with kids in grade K-12, government-run programs, and not-for-profit community-based recreational sports organizations in low-income areas on a need and first-come, first served basis as funds are available. Individual grants can be used for registration, equipment and other associated fees for sports classes, recreational leagues, and travel sports. Complete online contact form to start the process. Ben & Jerry’s Foundation: National Grassroots Organizing Grant Program (Rolling Basis through October 2024)
Program offers two-year unrestricted, general operating support grants to small, constituent-led grassroots organizations throughout the United States and its territories. Support is provided to organizations that are led by people working to help themselves and their communities create progressive change through organizing campaigns and movement building efforts aimed at dismantling systems of oppression and the legacies of white supremacy culture. Applicants must be nonprofits, have an annual operating budget under $350,000, use grassroots, base-building organizing campaigns as the primary strategy for creating social change. Award: Up to $30,000 per year. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
Kroger Foundation Community Gift Requests (Rolling Basis)
Focus on supporting community needs today and finding innovative solutions to help end hunger tomorrow. Employee contributions take several forms – financial contributions and donations of gift cards and products. Support is limited to hunger relief, sustainability, direct response and disaster relief, education and youth development, and support for military service members and veterans. Award: Varies by request and store location. Geographic Scope: Texas store locations
Leland Fikes Foundation (Rolling Basis, Letter of Intent)
The Foundation supports the local community though a variety of social service organizations addressing community needs such as housing, food, employment, and physical and mental health. Applicants should be prepared to share how racial equity informs their program development and implementation. Award: $5,000 - $150,000. Geographic Scope: Texas, with emphasis on Dallas area
Milbank Foundation (Rolling Basis)
Current priorities include community-based initiatives that empower people with disabilities, rehabilitation of veterans, helping seniors age in place, patient-centered health care reform, and programs that address mental health issues and present substance abuse and suicide. Letter of Intent required as first step in application through online platform. Award: Varies. 2022 awards ranged from $10,000 - $500,000. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
Shelton Family Foundation (Rolling Basis)
Funds for organizations engaged in basic human services, education, health, and community development. Eligible applicants include nonprofits, government entities, K-12 schools, community/junior colleges and universities, and faith-based organizations with programs that benefit the community at large. Applications are reviewed twice per year. Award: $500 - $100,000. Geographic Scope: West Central Texas with emphasis on Abilene
T-Mobile Hometown Grants Program (Rolling Basis)
Grants program to help build stronger, more prosperous small towns and rural communities. Examples of eligible projects include but are not limited to adaptive uses of older and historic buildings into community gathering spaces, improvements to outdoor parks or trails, and technology projects for the public library. Additional examples include art and community centers, and a variety of outdoor spaces. Eligible applicants include elected officials, town managers and employees, tribal leaders, and nonprofit community leaders from small towns with populations of less than 50,000. Requests are reviewed quarterly. Award: Up to $50,000 each for up to 100 towns each year for five years. Geographic Scope: Nationwide

HHS: Family and Youth Services and Supports Community Services Grant (March 20, 2024)
HHS0014132. Accepting applications for a Community Services Grant Project to connect individuals in need with community crisis pregnancy services, foster care outreach services, and community services. The project must target the following counties: Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, and Waller. Award: One award of up to $5,000,000 for one year. Geographic Scope: Greater Houston area
DOL: Pathway Home 5 Grants (April 4, 2024)
Funds to provide eligible incarcerated individuals in men’s and women’s state correctional facilities or local or county jails with workforce services prior to release and to continue services after release by transitioning the participants into reentry programs in the communities to which they will return. By providing for reentry services to begin while participants are still incarcerated and to continue post-release, these projects are designed to eliminate the time gap between release from prison and enrollment into a workforce development reentry program leading to skills-based employment, to improve individuals’ transition back into their communities, and to reduce recidivism. Eligible applicants include nonprofits, government entities, and Native American tribal organizations. Award: Approximately 20 grants of $1,000,000 - $4,000,000. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
DOJ: Sexual Assault Services Culturally Specific Grant Program (April 4, 2024)
Funds to establish, maintain, and expand sustainable, culturally appropriate services that address the unique needs and challenges of victims of sexual assault from culturally specific communities. Interventions and assistance may include 24-hour hotline services; accompaniment and advocacy through medical, criminal justice, and social support systems; crisis intervention; information and referral; outreach activities for underserved communities; and development and distribution of materials. Planning grants are also available. Eligible applicants include private, nonprofit organizations with the primary purpose of providing culturally specific services to American Indians, Alaska Natives, Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and other Pacific Islanders, Blacks, and Hispanics. Award: Up to 20 awards of $300,000 - $375,000 for projects of up to 36 months. Up to 4 Planning grants for up to $100,000 for projects of up to 24 months. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
CDC: Drug-Free Communities Support Program (April 17, 2024)
Funds for community-based coalitions addressing youth substance abuse that have not yet previously received a grant for this program. Award: 100 awards for up to $125,000. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
USDA: Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grants (April 29, 2024)
Grants to help rural communities use advanced telecommunications technology to connect each other and the world, overcoming the efforts of remoteness and low population density. Rural communities are defined as communities with populations of 20,000 or fewer. A minimum 15% match is required and cannot come from another federal source. Eligible applicants include state and local governments, federally recognized tribes, nonprofits, for-profit businesses, and groups of eligible entities working together. Award: $50,000 - $1,000,000. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
USDA: Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program Competitive Grants (May 14, 2024)
Funds to support projects that will increase the purchase of fruit and vegetables among low-income consumers who participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program by providing incentives at the point of purchase. Projects that serve underrepresented geographies and communities are encouraged. Eligible applicants include government agencies and nonprofit organizations. Award: Varies by project type from $100,000 - more than $500,000 for one to four years. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
NIMH: Technology Development to Reduce Health Disparities (May 2, 2025)
Funds to develop and translate medical technologies aimed at reducing disparities in healthcare access and health outcomes. Medical technologies should be effective, affordable, culturally acceptable, and deliverable to those who need them. Priority health disparity populations include racial and ethnic minorities, socioeconomically disadvantaged individuals, sexual and gender minorities, and medically underserved populations in rural and urban areas. Eligible applicants include higher education institutions, nonprofit organizations, governments, independent school districts, public housing authorities, small businesses, and for profit organizations. Award: Three to four awards of up to $500,000 per year for four years. Geographic Scope: Nationwide

The Center for Health Statistics (CHS) is the data collection and reporting arm of DSHS. Its Texas Health Data dashboard includes vital events, population health, and disease prevalence. As a grantseeker, CHS is a free source of current health data in Texas. Information about public health infrastructure, non-military hospitals, and health professionals is also available. Use CHS Data to help write your next grant’s Statement of Need. The GDC Data Resources page includes additional data sets to support your work.

Food is Medicine Initiative | American Heart Association (November 6, 2023)
This national initiative will help identify, support, and implement the most viable food is medicine strategies. Short term rapid cycle studies (18 months or less) that address challenges in feasibility and implementation or test approaches to achieve short-term behavior change. Award: up to $400,000. Outride Fund (November 11, 2023)
The Outride Fund partners with community non profits in the United States to promote cycling as a tool to improve social, emotional, and cognitive health. Support is provided for youth-focused projects (benefiting those under 25 years old) that promote the power of cycling to increase wellness and mental health, with a focus on underrepresented demographic groups. Examples of funded projects include school-based cycling programs, youth racing teams emphasizing mental health among riders, trail construction projects in places where there is little trail access or for a specific community-based or school-based program, educational programs, and infrastructure projects tied to a specific program or purpose related to mental and cognitive health. Award: $5,000 - $15,000. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
Barclay-Giel Seed Grants (November 12, 2023)
Support for community-based public health programs engaging in work related to health misinformation, health worker burnout, social connection, youth mental health, and workplace well-being. Projects should have a strong disease or injury prevention component that promotes wellness, early detection, and early interventions. Funds are not provided for clinical care or patient treatment. Award: up to $10,000. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
American Association of University Women (AAUW) Community Action Grants (November 15, 2023)
Community Action Grants provide funding to individuals, AAUW branches and AAUW state organizations as well as community-based non profits for general operating support and innovative projects that promote education and equity for women and girls. Robert Wood Johnson Foundation – Evidence For Action Grants (Rolling Basis)
This funding is geared toward studies about “upstream” causes of health inequities, such as the systems, structures, laws, policies, norms, and practices that determine the distribution of resources and opportunities, which in turn influence individuals’ options and behaviors. Research should center on the needs and experiences of communities exhibiting the greatest health burdens and be motivated by real-world priorities. It should inform a specific course of action and/or establish beneficial practices, not stop at characterizing or documenting the extent of a problem. The application process begins with the submission of a two-page Letter of Intent (LOI). Award: No set range. Geographic Scope: Nationwide

USDA Community Food Projects Grant Program (October 30, 2023)
The CFPCGP is intended to bring together stakeholders from distinct parts of the food system and to foster understanding of national food security trends and how they might improve local food systems. Understanding that low-income individuals experience disproportionate access to healthy foods, projects are to address food and nutrition insecurity, particularly among our nation’s most vulnerable populations. Award: $25,000 - $400,000. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
The Texans Feeding Texans Home-Delivered Meal Grant Program was established to help supplement and extend the applicant's current home-delivered meal program for seniors and/or disabled Texans. Early Hearing Detection and Intervention State/Territory Program (November 6, 2023)
The purpose of this program is to enhance the state/territory EHDI system infrastructure to improve language acquisition for deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children up to age 3. Funding will support state and territory EHDI systems of services so that DHH newborns, infants, and young children up to age 3 receive appropriate and timely services, including hearing screening, diagnosis, and early intervention. Award: up to $310,000. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
Development of cost-effective technologies that may reduce or even eliminate disparities in SUD treatment. Disparities due to geographical access or rural/urban divide, due to treatment cost, or due to stigma will be specifically targeted. The intention is to bring to the treatment to the patient, not the patient to the treatment. Award: Up to $1,972,828. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
Thriving Communities Regional Pilot Program, U.S. Department of Transportation (November 15, 2023)
Planning, technical assistance, and capacity building support to enable disadvantaged and under-resourced communities to advance a pipeline of transformative infrastructure projects that will increase mobility, reduce pollution, and expand affordable transportation options, connecting communities to the essential opportunities and resources that will help them thrive. Award: $1,000,000 – $2,000,000 over 3 years. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
The purpose of QIF funding is to support health centers to develop and pilot innovative, patient centered, scalable models of care delivery to reduce health disparities and address the clinical and health related social needs of patients. Award: up to $2,000,000. Geographic Scope: Nationwide
NIH Build UP Trust Challenge (December 5, 2023)
The National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) Build UP Trust Challenge seeks solutions that increase research participation and the adoption of medical care by building trust and improving engagement with historically underserved communities. Submit Readiness Tool by November 14, 2023 to determine eligibility. Award: up to 10 finalists will receive $45,000 for their solution and an opportunity to win one of four $200,000 prizes. Healthy Start: Eliminating Disparities in Perinatal Health (December 15, 2023)
Health Resources and Services Administration grants to improve health outcomes before, during, and after pregnancy and to reduce racial/ethnic disparities in rates of infant death and adverse perinatal outcomes. Funding is set aside for rural communities. Award: up to $1,100,000 per year for 5 years. Geographic Scope: Nationwide.

Data Resource: Breast Cancer
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In 2022, an estimated 19,921 women in Texas were diagnosed with breast cancer. An estimated 3,415 died from it. Breast cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death among women in Texas. The purpose of the DSHS Texas Cancer Registry is to collect, maintain, and disseminate the highest quality cancer data that will contribute towards cancer prevention and control—improving diagnoses, treatment, survival, and quality of life for all cancer patients. You can find a web report and data brief for female breast cancer in Texas on the Breast Cancer page. The GDC Data Resources page includes additional health-related data sets to pair with your organization’s own client or patient data in grant proposals.

Women’s health is currently an underserved area for innovation, facing disproportionately low R&D funding relative to its burden. The HFFI Partnerships Program is for regional, state, or local public-private partnerships that are organized to improve access to fresh, healthy foods and provide financial and technical assistance to eligible projects. Partnerships include meaningful collaboration between two or more organizations. Partnerships must be public-private partnerships; one entity must be a public entity such as a local, state or a tribal authority, government, or agency; the others may be non profits, for-profit businesses, foundations, food policy councils, food systems and food access organizations, among others. TCDD Culturally Inclusive Family Support (November 17, 2023)
The Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities (TCDD) announces funding for organizations to provide and promote culturally inclusive supports for families of people with developmental disabilities (DD). Data Resource: Alzheimer's Disease
If you need data on Alzheimer’s Disease, visit the DSHS Alzheimer’s Disease Program page. A statewide Alzheimer’s public awareness campaign in English and Spanish launched in August 2020 and continues into 2025. The campaign raises awareness about signs of Alzheimer’s, importance of getting a diagnosis, and other resources. The Texas Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS) data for 2021 are also available, including data from the caregiving and cognitive decline modules. The GDC Data Resources page lists additional health-related data sets to pair with your organization’s own client or patient data in grant proposals.

HHS: Innovation Challenge to Prevent Human Trafficking Among Women and Girls (February 1, 2024)
National competition to identify existing innovative programs that address human trafficking prevention among women and girls in the United States. Provides funding to accredited schools of nursing to establish and operate a student loan fund and provide loans to students enrolled in advanced nursing degree programs who are committed to becoming nurse faculty. In exchange for completion of up to four years of post-graduation full-time nurse faculty employment in an accredited school of nursing, the program authorizes cancellation of up to 85 percent of the original student loan amount (plus interest thereon). The program also encourages Advance Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) to serve as full-time preceptors within an academic-practice partnership framework. SAMHSA: Emergency Medical Services Training Grants (March 20, 2024)
Grants for programs to recruit and train Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel in rural areas with a focus on addressing substance use disorders (SUD) and co-occurring disorders (COD) of substance use and mental health. Recipients of the federal funding will be expected to train EMS personnel on SUD and COD, as well as trauma-informed, recovery-based care for people with such disorders. Eligible applicants are rural EMS agencies operated by a local or tribal government (fire-based and non-fire-based) and rural non-profit EMS agencies. USDOL: Stand Down Grants (Rolling Basis through September 30, 2025)
Stand Down Grants are provided to organizations for the purpose of hosting Stand Down Events that provide a wide variety of employment, social, and health services to veterans experiencing or at risk of homelessness to promote self-sufficiency and help individuals reenter the workforce. Required services include health screenings and examinations; housing/shelter referral; mental health services; Department of Labor employment and job training assistance; and veterans' benefit counseling. Access to basic hygiene supplies, showers, haircuts, attention to health concerns, and other collaborative services may also be provided to participants on the day of the event. Eligible applicants include State and local workforce boards; veterans service organizations; local public agencies; tribal governments; and nonprofits including community- and faith-based organizations. Award: Maximum of $10,000 for a multi-day event or $7,000 for a one-day event. Funds are noncompetitive and awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis until available funding is exhausted. NIH: The Role of Work in Health Disparities in the U.S. (R01 Clinical Trials Optional) (September 8, 2024)
This program provides grants for innovative population-based research in how work or occupation influences health outcomes and health status among health disparity populations and how work functions as a social determinant of health. Studies must focus on NIH-designated health disparity populations, including racial and ethnic minority populations, sexual and gender minority groups, underserved rural populations, or socioeconomically disadvantaged populations of any race or ethnicity.
