The Texas Interagency Obesity Council

The Texas Interagency Obesity Council was created under Senate Bill 556 during the 80th Texas Legislature Session. The members of the Council are the Commissioners for the Department of State Health Services (DSHS), the Texas Education Agency (TEA), and the Department of Agriculture. The Council monitors and evaluates obesity prevention efforts in the state of Texas for children and adults. The Council serves to:

  1. Enhance communication and coordination of the critical health issue of obesity among state leaders; and
  2. Guide future planning around obesity prevention, health promotion and improved nutrition.

Legislation

Senate Bill 556 amends Section 1. Subtitle E, Title 2 of the Health and Safety Code by adding Chapter 114 to create an “Interagency Obesity Council” made up of the Commissioners of Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA), the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and the Department of State Health Services (DSHS), or a staff member designated by each commissioner.  The Council must meet at least 1 time per year to: (1) discuss the status of each agency’s programs that promote better health and nutrition and prevent obesity among children and adults, and (2) consider the feasibility of tax incentives for employers who promote activities designed to reduce obesity in the workforce.  The Council must report to the governor, lieutenant governor, and speaker of the house of representatives on activities of the council by January 15 of each odd-numbered year, including (1) a list of programs in each agency designed to promote better health and nutrition, (2) an assessment of the steps taken by each program, (3) progress made by taking these steps, (4) areas of improvement that are needed in the programs, and (5) recommendations for future goals or legislation.
