Obesity Data in Texas

2023 data in Texas shows that over one-third of adult Texans and one-fifth of Texas children ages 10 to 17 years old have obesity1

Approximately:

  • 35% of adults who do not meet daily fruit and vegetable consumption recommendations have obesity.
  • 40% of adults who do not meet aerobic or strength training guidelines have obesity.
  • 40% of adults who report no leisure time physical activity have obesity.

Obesity has many causes. Certain lifestyle behaviors increase the risk of developing obesity and related health conditions. These behaviors may include lack of physical activity, unhealthy eating behaviors, not getting enough good-quality sleep, your environment, and high amounts of stress2.

Having overweight and/or obesity increases a person’s risk of serious medical conditions. Obesity can cause a person to be more susceptible to:

  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • High blood pressure
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Certain cancers

These types of diseases may impact a person's quality of life and have large economic consequences for our healthcare system.
